How to read a PDF aloud on iPhone
Short answer
To have your iPhone read a PDF aloud, you can turn on Speak Screen in Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, then swipe down with two fingers on the open PDF. For natural voices, word by word highlighting and a library that remembers your place, import the PDF into the VoiceFlow AI Reader and press play.
Option 1: Speak Screen (built in, free)
Go to Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content and turn on Speak Screen. Open the PDF in Files or Books and swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers. Your iPhone reads the visible page with the system voice. It is free but robotic, and it can stumble on columns, headers and page numbers.
Option 2: Speak Selection (built in, free)
In the same Spoken Content menu, turn on Speak Selection. Select a passage, then tap Speak. Good for a paragraph, tiring for a whole document.
Option 3: VoiceFlow AI Reader (natural AI voices)
- Install VoiceFlow AI from the App Store. No account needed.
- Open the Reader and import the PDF from Files, or scan paper pages with the camera.
- Pick a voice and press play. Each word is highlighted as it is spoken.
- Lock your phone and keep listening, or stop and pick up later from the same spot.
